The Female Combatants Or Who Shall, 1776

17.3-McKellop-1.jpg

Great Britain is represented by a classy women wearing proper expensive clothing.

A withering stump holding a “FOR OBEDIENCE” banner and a German-style shield with a northern-facing compass rose—pointing towards both Lord North, the Revolutionary-era prime minister of Great Britain, and the authoritarian German government.

The daughter is in a bare natural state fighting for her freedom.

" America" is being represented by a naked women dressed in traditional Native American clothing.

1776 was the year in which American colonies declared independence from Great Britain due to Britain taxing Americans without representation.

A flourishing tree holding a shield marked with the Gallic rooster of France and a "FOR LIBERTY" banner under it, marking the allegiance of American colonists with France and freedom from an oppressive government.

The mother is creating a cruel and unfair attack by forcing her daughter to obey and be civilized.

During the 1700's King George III and many British people as well thought of Americans as rebellious for wanting independence from Britain because they were being taxed.  This painting was in the British newspaper and was intended to show the feud between Great Britain and America and wanted people to agree that America needed to be taught obedience, they also wanted Americans to know the British disagree with their actions. Americans were accustomed to governing their own government and being able to speak up for their rights so when they weren't aware of being taxed to pay for Great Britain's debt due to the French and Indian war, and the Parliament which had no American to represent Americans they felt as if they had no right to take their money. The British felt as if they should pay because Britain fought the war to defend the Americans from powerful French in Canada.

What Does It Mean To Be An American?

Being an American means being able to decide who you want to lead your country and being able to freedom of expression and freedom of speech, for example, voting and being able to protest, but now a days we aren't allowed to express ourselves or say what we want. Many people are arrested during protests and many people as seen on social media are being harassed for speaking a different language or wearing traditional clothing. Americans should be allowed to voice their concerns or speak up against injustice. The world is changing and Americans should welcome it rather than still think of themselves as separate.
